The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

The new Omicron variant of COVID-19 has affected our Christmas plans as well. Yesterday, we cancelled our plane tickets to Vancouver in exchange for a future travel voucher.

The Federal Government hasn't said anything specific about traveling within Canada but it has recommended that everyone avoid international travel.

The Province has limited private gatherings to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors

  • Restaurants must send everyone home at 11 pm, although take away and delivery can continue.

  • All businesses, including restaurants, are now limited to 50 per cent capacity, regardless of whether they need to check vaccine certificates or not

Ottawa Public Health has issued stronger regulations over what the Province has promulgated and limited restaurant tables to six people

In Gatineau, bars, gyms, movie theatres, concert venues and spas must close as of 5:00 pm today. Restaurants may only open at 50 per cent capacity.

We almost made it but it looks like it will be small Christmas gatherings for a second year running. At least we're all pros at it now.

We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️The Trillium Line re-opening has been delayed to 2023. The line had been scheduled to reopen August 2022, the new date is May 2023, nine months later. As for the Confederation Line, it's extention looks to be 10 months behind schedule of its planned May 2025 opening. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️The 300 cubic metres of sewage dumped into the Ottawa River last month was due to a calibration error. The new supersewer had been built to keep rainwater and sewage out of the river but a storage tunnel overflowed because instruments said it still had room. City staff have recalibrated the measuring devices. [CBC]
