  • We are aware of the fire hydrant placement at the intersection of Carling Avenue and Champagne Avenue

  • – A line from an email by Court Curry, manager for the City of Ottawa for Right of Way, Heritage and Urban Design, when asked why there is a fire hydrant in the middle of a brand new sidewalk that now has to have a construction cone in front of it to prevent accidents. Oh yes, there is a picture.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚊 The CBC has new details about the leaky O Train tunnel at St-Laurent. Some joints in the tunnel – the flexible sealant between concrete sections – had not been replaced in the 37 years since the tunnel had been built, originally for buses. The experts interviewed said the seals have a five to 15 year lifespan. Additionally, there are still leaks dripping into the station. – Priscilla Ki Sun Hwang at CBC

🏗️ The former Department of National Defence building at the corner of O’Connor and Slater Streets is being torn down floor-by-floor for a residential tower. The building owner, Montréal-based Groupe Mach, considered converting the existing structure to residential but calculated it was a better deal to tear down and rebuild.  – Ottawa Construction News

📚 Those following the drama of the closed libraries in The Nation, next door to Ottawa, will be pleased to learn that they are back in business. The municipality on Ottawa’s eastern border closed its libraries in January after the chief librarian retired and several board members resigned, leaving the organization leaderless. – The Review

↪ Another neighbouring library system, that of Clarence-Rockland, will now also run the local museum, niftily named the Clarence-Rockland Museum. – The Review

💸 As it does every month, CTV Ottawa reports the annual income required by a person to buy an average house in Ottawa the previous month. In May, that salary was $134,020 – $280 less than April – and  the average price of an Ottawa home was $629,800. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🛒 Every week, @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, he finds specials on ground beef (medium $4.44/lb) at IGA, pork chops ($2.88/lb) at Food Basics, and good deals on local strawberries all around. – /Ottawa

DAILY POLL

The Poll:

Last time, we asked ‘Do you agree with Ottawa Health’s plan to test the water at beaches weekly instead of daily?’

14% Yes, in this case the science doesn’t get more accurate daily rather than weekly

48% No, if something is wrong, it's risky to wait so long

30% I don’t know but I don’t generally have a disagreement with Ottawa Public Health procedures

8% I don’t know but I have lost trust in public authorities

0% Other

Today’s Poll:

Are you bilingual in French and English at your job?
