Tuesday Jobs: Poisoned Chalice Edition Some job descriptions don't mention the extra aggravation involved. We've clarified what's involved for a few new employment ads. ▪️SNC-Lavalin is hiring a Stations Project Manager, responsible for building the individual stations on the new Trillium Line. We're not sure which would be more heartburn inducing: working in Ottawa Transit or working for SNC-Lavalin. ▪️The City of Ottawa is hiring a Transit Communications Officer. $63 - 89,000 per year, and, in this case, Tums is probably a legitimate tax deduction. ▪️The City is also hiring a Councillor's Assistant, Level II. There is no indication to which councillor the lucky candidate would be assigned: one of the fun activist councillors, who are always in the public eye? One of the businesslike ones, who welcome visitors like the Godfather on his daughter’s wedding day? Or will they be assigned to that guy. You know the one we mean. ▪️Reporting Unit Agent for the Ottawa Police Service. This position takes all the non-emergency calls except the job description says, ‘Assess and transfer to Communication Centre life or death emergencies; except in the event of a suicidal callers where immediate assistance is required and risks managed immediately’. $34 per hour for life and death decisionmaking. ▪️CTV National News is looking for a producer for the Ottawa Bureau, where you will simultaneously be a lickspittle for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals, a mouthpiece for the Conservatives while all the time be a secret socialist. We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren ⚙️ Is there something that Ottawa should know about? Email to us at hello@theottawan.com. We read every single comment. |

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT ▪️The Citizen has an obituary of June Lindsey, who was an unsung discoverer of DNA. Lindsay worked on her PhD in the laboratory of James Watson and Francis Crick at Cambridge University in the 40s and 50s. Her structural work there led to the discovery of the double helix and a Nobel prize for Watson and Crick. (Rosalind Franklin, another scientist at the lab, was also crucial but left out of the DNA story and Nobel prize as well.) Lindsay died earlier this month at age 99. [Ottawa Citizen] ▪️Ottawa Transit Riders, Free Transit Ottawa, Horizon Ottawa, and Courage Ottawa jointly request that the transit fare increase be cancelled. The city's Transit Commission will meet tomorrow, where it is expected that transit fares will increase 2.5% to $3.70 for a single trip, more expensive than Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, or Vancouver. [Horizon Ottawa] + Related The Transit Commission will also discuss providing free passes to people living in shelters ▪️The public is being asked their opinion on the proposed designs of the LGBTQ2+ National Monument. Five designs have been shortlisted for the monument, planned to be built on land between Wellington Street and the Ottawa River by 2025. After the survey closes November 28 – and, note, it's a form, so they are taking the public's view seriously – a jury of experts in visual arts, landscape architecture, architecture and urban design, as well as LGBT Purge survivors and other stakeholders will make the final decision. The LGBT Purge was the time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Canadians were systematically forced out of jobs in the Canadian Armed Forces, the RCMP, and the federal public service.
