WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
🏒 Ottawa Charge trainers were seen taping packages of mustard on the glass of the player’s bench at Sunday’s match. Mustard – and pickle juice – are considered by some to help alleviate muscle cramps. – Ian Kennedy in the Hockey News No. No, no, no, no. No. Some Charge superfans have taken it upon themselves to bring kazoos to the matches and blow the wretched things in support of the team. No, stop it now before it becomes a hallowed tradition. – Janson Duench in the Ottawa Citizen 💰 City staff recommend that parking in ByWard Market and parts of the Glebe and Little Italy should cost something on evenings and Sundays. Currently, parking meter charges in those areas end at 5:30 pm. The plan would extend that to 9:30 pm. The staff report works out that $3 million could be generated. – Josh Pringle at CTV 🗳️ Two Members of Parliament from the area have been chosen for New Edinburgh-via-Rockcliffe resident Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet. David McGuinty of Ottawa South will be the new minister of national defence, while Steven MacKinnon of Gatineau will become House Leader for the government. – Paula Tran in the Ottawa Citizen Greg Fergus from Hull-Aylmer was speaker of the House before the election and in normal times would be expected to continue in the job. However, as the Liberals are two seats short of a majority, the government may not want to lose a vote by making one of its own speaker. Conservative Chris d'Entremont of Nova Scotia has put his name forward. The Green Party’s Elizabeth May has been more coy, saying that she’d make a good speaker but ‘I’m not actively working on any such thing at the moment’.
🌊 The 613 has dropped a new Municipal Panel podcast. Former journalists Jon Willing and Joanne Chianello join economist Neil Saravanamuttoo to discuss the Osgoode ward candidates, that resident who received an eight year-old water bill, and red light cameras. – The 613 |

MADE IN CANADA DEALS OF THE DAY |
This is quite a good story by Matteo Cimellaro in the Ottawa Citizen but it doesn’t really lend itself to encapsulation. For years, volunteers have worked as docents in the National Gallery, leading tour groups and giving talks. But a union rule against replacing staff with volunteers, and a trend by the National Gallery leadership to manage the gallery's messaging, are making the volunteers fear they are unwanted. |
