HELLO OTTAWA

The City wants to know what you think is fun, or at the very least, cultural.

Reasoning that it has been 20 years since the Cultural Funding Framework was created, the City is looking to nip and tuck the programme. Is someone getting just a little too much funding? Are our artists delivering the right criteria in their art?

You can complete the survey here.

    Number

    • US $563 million
    • – The amount of debt that the company that makes Insta Pot has incurred as it announces bankruptcy today. While the Insta Pot was sold to a US company in 2019, the kitchen gadget was invented by former NorTel engineer Robert Wang in Kanata in 2009. (Pete Evans at CBC)

    Ottawan of the Day

    Quote

    • I think people have the right to have their private property free from someone else’s cat
    • – Doreen O'Sullivan, councillor for Kemptville, who is advocating for a bylaw that would allow free roaming cats to be taken to the pound. (Guy Quenneville at CBC)

    ♻️ Garbage Plans

    •  Throwing out two years of planning, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe wants to change the two bin sticker plan. City staff had recommended that all households receive 55 stickers per year to place on their garbage bins,, with extra stickers available for $3 each. Many residents objected – some arguing that it does not take into consideration household size, others asking how was this number developed. In the committee stage, River ward councillor Riley Brockington has attempted to raise the number to three bags and was voted down by his fellow councillors, the same councillors who will reconsider it today. (Kate Porter at CBC)

    🌿 Ottawa Public Health

    •  Ottawa Public Health is asking Health Canada to add graphic warning to cannabis products. The health agency is also upset that there are too many cannabis stores clustered together and doesn’t want graphics that appeal to children sold in these adults-only stores. The topic will be voted upon at next week’s Ottawa Board of Health meeting. (CBC)

    💸 Revenu Québec

    •  If you live in Gatineau but use an Ottawa address for tax purposes, Revenu Québec is looking for you. Mostly the investigations are coming from neighbours who are reporting the fake Ontarians, reasoning that this is fraud on the Québec taxpayer. Revenu Québec investigated 137 people last year, compared to 17 the previous year. (Daniel Leblanc at CBC)

    🏠 Home Prices

    •  According to CTV Toronto, Ottawa is on the most affordable large city list three times. The Toronto-based writer considers Kanata and Nepean as separate cities from Ottawa. Anyway, some company made a list of all cities in Ontario and figures – by local average wages – Nepean is the most affordable, Ottawa is second most, and Kanata is third. (Katherine DeClerq at CTV) (The List)

    ✈️ O Train

    •  The O Train has started testing the airport link of the Trillium Line. When it is operating, the line will run between South Keys Station and the Ottawa International Airport terminal. While the builders are aiming to hand over the line in October, there is no date yet for opening. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
