HELLO OTTAWA

The National Capital Commission is in the final stages of developing a plan for Sir George-Étienne Cartier Park, and it wants your input.

The new developments will be pathways, trails, national cultural institutions, and green spaces along a 13-kilometre stretch of federal lands along the Ottawa River, from Rideau Hall to the end of the parkway at St Joseph Boulevard.

You can read about the plan here, and answer the Commission’s survey here.

Have a great weekend everyone. Between the Open House Ottawa, the Red Trillium Studio tour, or Dr. Bob’s Wrestling Flea Market, you have no excuse at all to hide away at home.

– Martha and Darren

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🔥 Ottawa Fire Service

    •  The Ottawa Fire Service has barred horseplay and ‘physical interactions’ in its stationsLong a part of firefighter culture, rookies ‘jostle’ for the right to do menial tasks like washing dishes. The new rules advise ‘suggesting rotations, rolling dice or cutting a deck of cards’. The directive came six months after criminal charges were laid against two senior firefighters over an alleged assualt of a rookie. That case is currently being tried. (Alistair Steele at CBC)

    🏠 Coöperative Housing

    •  A 16 year resident is being evicted from Co-op Voisins, in part, she says, because she went public about its goverance troubles. The coöp has made a list of incidents involving the woman, including alleged verbal abuse against members and failing to exercise control of her chihuahua. One incident said she ‘engaged in interviews with the Ottawa Citizen, disseminating misinformation that resulted in detriment to the reputation of the co-operative’. (Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🧭 New Zoning Law

    •  The City has created an interactive online map to show the proposed zoning changes across Ottawa. The map shows the City as it is today – May 31 – and how the zones would change under the new law. It’s just a map – not a three dimensional rendering, although that is promised for the future – but it is helpful. Of note, there is no way to access the map from the Engage Ottawa pagethe ottawan pulled its collective hair out trying to find it, but eventually found it. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen) (The Interactive Map)

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

City Council has approved the new garbage policy for the autumn: all homes will be limited to three 140 litre containers per fortnight.

Katelyn Wilson at CTV asks a rubbish question: where do you get a 140 litre bin? Those regular plastic wheelie bins are 240 litres, old school garbage cans are around 120 litres. She couldn’t find a 140 litre bin at Walmart, Home Depot,  Home Hardware, or Canadian Tire.

Elyse Skura at CBC also asks some trashy questions: ‘Does my basement renter also get three items?’ (No, the three item limit goes with the house), ‘Is the limit on bags or bins?’ (It's on bins, shove in as many bags as you like), and ‘Where can I buy the yellow bags?’ (Residents can buy four yellow bags at $19.89 if they have extra trash. But not every ward has a place to buy them and staff is still figuring it out).
