The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

Today is Bear Witness day, which works to ensure that Indigenous families on reserves may access the same provision of child and family services that other Canadians take for granted. First Nations children still do not enjoy the same access to these support systems. Learn more by watching Jordan River Anderson: The Messenger. Visit the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society website for more information.

▪️The Festival of Small Halls 2022 launches the first of its three weekends this Friday May 13th, with performances by Kaia Later at St.John’s United Church in Brockville, Great Lake Swimmers at Manotick United Church (Sold Out), and Chris Murphy at St. Andrew’s United Church in Pakenham. The festival programs intimate music performances in the small venues that are found in the towns and communities in our corner of Ontario.

▪️During the summer months, many Ottawans enjoy Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), the regular delivery of produce from local farms through the purchase of membership shares. Ottawa Farm Fresh wants to bring farm deliveries to lower-income households. The farm will match every dollar donated to its CSA Accessibility Fund, allowing those who wouldn’t normally have the ability to enjoy the CSA experience to take part. Applications are also being accepted from those wanting to access the subsidised share membership

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️European deer has taken up residence in South Ottawa. The white fallow stag, native to Turkey, has befriended five horses on a farm near Manotick, not straying far from them. The deer is thought to have come from a deer farm but an escapee has not been reported to the Minstry of Environment. [CBC]

▪️Rideau-Vanier councillor Mathieu Fleury will not run in October's election. First elected in 2010, Fleury says that he will remain in Ottawa and is looking for new ways to contribute to the city. Including the mayor, eight incumbants have decided not to run again for council this year. [CBC]
