    OTTAWAN (HONORARY) OF THE DAY

    • Jayiesh Singh

    • The Toronto-based inventor saw his invention, the ALTA Platform inaugurated at Bruyère Health Saint-Vincent Hospital last week. Tranferring patients from bed-to-bed is labour intensive, and usually requires three or four healthcare professionals at a time. The robotic ALTA Platform only requires one healthcare professional to assist the patient.

    QUOTE

    • There’s this one [influencer] I follow on Instagram, she talks a lot about Canadian politics and the climate and all that stuff. When she posts about the election, I pay attention because I feel like she cares about the same things that I do.

    • – Twenty three year-old health science student at Carleton University Morgan Napper, who is one of millions of people who prefer getting their election information from social media.
    • – Jaida Mccain in Capital Current

    SPORTS

    • 🏒 NHL Ottawa Senators 2 – Toronto Maple Leafs 3 last night (Game 2 of Round 1)

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💰 The provincial Ministry of Education is launching a financial investigation into the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board over how the Board handles its finances. The investigator for the Ministry will report back on May 30; a poor report could result in the Province taking over the Board’s financial responsibilities. It has been four years since the Board had a balanced budget and, for the next budget, it is expecting a $20 million shortfall. – Gabrielle Huston and Joseph Tunney at CBC

⚖️ Another piece of the class action over the Phoenix pay system for federal employees has been settled. Certain non-unionized and casual federal public servants were not included in the previous settlement over the screwy Phoenix system, those employees may now be eligible for $350.

Details of who is eligible and how to apply are on this page. The deadline is October 25, 2025. – Ted Raymond at CTV

🌻 The City has launched a handy page on how to properly use the City-owned land in front of your house as a garden.  Food plants are allowed, as are raised beds in some areas. There is also a list of disallowed plants – to THE OTTAWAN, it appears mostly to be the poisonous ones or invasive types. Really – who would deliberately plant poison ivy? – City of Ottawa

🏒 CHEO chief executive Dr Vera Etches has challenged her counterpart at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children to a bet over the Stanley Cup playoffs. The losing chief executive must wear the winning team’s jersey all day at work. Said Toronto’s Dr Ronald Cohn, ‘Can you imagine me walking around in a Sens jersey for one full day? Absolutely not’ but he did take on the bet with Etches.  – Ted Raymond at CTV

↪ CHEO symbolically broke ground yesterday for its new Integrated Treatment Centre, which will consolidate services and programmes across eight locations. – CHEO

✂️ Dogs and cats are invited to a free rabies vaccination tomorrow. Ottawa Public Health and the VCA Canada collection of veterinary hospitals are sponsoring the shots from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, April 25, at Banff Avenue Community House, 2084 Banff Avenue, Units A and B.

Food and treats provided. (For the pets, not you.) – Ottawa Public Health

      BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Research has found that, in a majority of people, ‘[w]hen presented with images of an inkblot-like rounded shape and a spiky shape and the made-up words ‘bouba’ and “kiki,” the vast majority of people are likely to associate bouba with the curvy shape and kiki with the jagged one’.

The ‘bouba-kiki effect’ inspired Carleton University psychology researcher David Sidhu to investigate how meaning is mapped onto words. ‘For example, thinking about abstract paintings, how somebody can look at a shape or a colour and think, ‘that’s justice,’ or ‘that’s love.’ I’ve also always been interested in language and how we can use sounds to project what we’re thinking into another person’s mind, almost like telepathy’, he say.

There are no answers here,  just an interesting side quest. – Carleton University
