Yesterday, we wrote of a bridge in East Ottawa that will potentially be closed to heavy agricultural vehicles. A reader comments: |
’Sarsfield is not a lonesome area of Orléans! As a matter of fact, it is about 35km Southeast of Orléans. Orléans was a small village, and still is small, before it was amalgamated within Ottawa, and in no way represents a rural part of East Ottawa’. |
Just blame Darren. Darren is still figuring out what’s where in Ottawa. |

$175,000 |
The amount for money that Stittsville’s Turcotte family has raised for charity from their annual front lawn ode to Christmas films since 2021. This year’s theme is a mash up of Christmas Vacation, The Grinch, and Die Hard, which is a film that takes place at Christmas time but not actually a Christmas film*. Donations will go to CHEO. You can view the mayhem at 18 Cypress Gardens. But make sure you check it out this season, the family says this is the final year.
* That, dear reader, is what we in the professional newsletter business call “engagement trolling.” The debate as to whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie is a subject that can drive people completely bonkers. | | Natasha O’Neill at CityNews |

| You’d ask people the jazz artist that was playing or singing at the restaurant they went to and they can never really remember. Whereas if it were Taylor Swift they would never forget that |

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT |
💸 Payments in lieu of taxes |
▪️Property taxes could rise 1.5 per cent if the City loses its judicial review against the Federal government. The Federal government is not obligated to pay property taxes anywhere in Canada, however in practice, it makes ‘payments in lieu of taxes’. While payments are calculated by the Federal government, they generally are in line with local tax rates. However, when the Province removed the education tax from businesses in 2021, it said that this did not apply to the Federal government. The Federal government ignored the suggestion and continued to pay the local albeit reduced rate. According to documents provided by the City to the court, homeowner property taxes would need to rise by up to 1.5 per cent if it loses. | | Elyse Skura at CBC |
|
|
⚡ Gatineau |
▪️Over 56,000 people are without power in Gatineau right now. Hydro Québec blames equipment failure. There is no word yet on when power will be restored. | | William Eltherington at CTV |
|
|
🚨 Ottawa Police Service |
▪️The Ottawa Police Service says that it has not been tracking mistaken identity arrests. The admission comes from a question by Alta Vista ward councillor Marty Carr, who asked about policy after police shocked a man with ‘a stun gun, pinned him to the ground, punched him in the face and handcuffed him before realizing their mistake’. Police thought he was a murder suspect. The Service says that it is considering tracking wrongful arrests. | | Faith Greco at CBC |

|
⛺ Newcomer Reception Centres |
▪️The City will have a public information session tomorrow about the newcomer reception centre planned for Nepean. The centre, on Federal land at 1645 Woodroffe Avenue will be of the ‘sprung structure’ variety. The session will cover: • The asylum claimant and settlement process • Services to be provided at the reception centre • Site selection process and criteria • Details about the proposed structure and construction timeline The session will be held at Nepean Sportsplex (Halls A&B), 1701 Woodroffe Avenue, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. | | City of Ottawa |

BUT, ONE MORE THING … |
Algonquin College paramedic student Matthew Young is attempting a create a community through the medium of rubber ducks. We’re all probably aware of the hand wave that Volkswagen Bug and Subaru owners gave each other, the same thing happens with Jeep owners. Young, disappointed that he could not afford a Jeep has made it his personal mission to create a community of Toyota RAV4 owners, like him, by leaving small rubber ducks in door handles of the vehicles when he comes across them. If this becomes a thing in 20 years, remember that you read it here first. | | Stephanie Taylor in the Algonquin Times |
