    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🥶 Ice Storms

    • Environment Canada is warning that a ‘significant’ ice storm may occur over this weekend. Freezing rain is expected and that usually results in power outages. Many areas of Ottawa were without power for up to a week as a result of the April 2023 ice storm.

      Natasha O’Neill at CityNews

    🗳️ Osgoode By-election

    • Nominations have opened to run for ward councillor in Osgoode. Candidates must be citizens, at least 18 years of age, and either reside or own land in Ottawa or be married to someone who resides or owns land here. Deadline to bring the completed paperwork to City Hall is Friday, May 2, at 2:00 pm.

      City of Ottawa

    ⚕️ The Ottawa Hospital

    • The Ottawa Hospital has apologized to one of its researchers for a campaign of sexual harassment and bullying by some of its staff. An independent investigation found that Dr Marisa Azad was the victim of ‘a repeated pattern of harassment undertaken by two physicians’ and ‘workplace sexual harassment’ by one of them. Azad was in the news last year for breakthroughs in phage therapy treatment, a technique that uses special viruses that only infect bacteria.

Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen

    🦉 Newly Protected Land

    • Councillors rationalized to themselves a way to purchase a 223-acre waterfront property near Fitzroy Harbour. City staff had called the property ‘ecologically significant’ and, as the Natural Area Acquisition account had enough money and authority to buy it, wanted to purchase it without the necessity of a Council vote. Some rural councillors balked, including local West Carleton ward councillor Clarke Kelly, who said it was a waste of money.

Clarke eventually proposed that two small parcels, worth a few hundred thousand dollars, be severed and sold to private developers. The entire property is on sale for $1.95 million.

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll

Yesterday, we asked ‘What is your favourite way to cross the Ottawa River?’

    27% Alexandra Bridge

    9% Chaudière Bridge

    16% Chief William Commanda Bridge

    13% Macdonald-Cartier Bridge

    12% Masson - Cumberland Ferry

    8% Portage Bridge

    2% Thurso - Rockland Ferry

    8% Portage Bridge

    10% Quyon Ferry

    2% Walking (Winter only)

THE OTTAWAN highly recommends taking one of those ferries, just for fun.

    Today’s Poll:

The City has a great page on being prepared for Ottawa-style emergencies, including a checklist of what you should keep on hand if you must be on your own for awhile.
