STATISTICS OTTAWA

    NUMBER

    • $10.5 million
    • – The amount of money that City reckons it will save this year due to the carbon tax rate being reduced to zero. OC Transpo saves $7.2 million in fuel tax, City buildings save $1.9 million from natural gas tax, and an additional $1.5 million comes from the fuel tax of City-owned vehicles. The infomation came as a result of a query by Beacon Hill-Cyrville ward councillor Tim Tierney.

    OTTAWANS OF THE DAY

    QUOTE

    • Never ever crossed my mind that it was going to be a 4-0 series. No, we said it from the start it’s going to be a long one, it’s going to be a tight one and we’re going to do everything in our power to make it to seven now.

    • – Sens goaltender Linus Ullmark assuring that the team will win the next four matches, starting tomorrow night.
    • – The Canadian Press

    SPORTS

    • 🏒 NHL Ottawa Senators 2 – Toronto Maple Leafs 3 last night (Game 3 of Round 1)
    • The NHL is also investigating allegations that some Sens lobbed pucks at  Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz during the pregame warmup. There is a Zapruder-quality video included but THE OTTAWAN certainly can’t tell. Nick Horwat in Sports Illustrated

    Agenda

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚌 Dozens of changes to OC Transpo bus routes begin on Sunday. The linked article covers the specifics, but some nuggets:

    • Routes 16, 27, 28, 37, 46, 50, 54, 55, 64, 83, 89, 96, 97, 114, 131, 140, 141, 153, 154, 155, 164, 166, 171, 175, 176, 185, 186, 190, 199 are being replaced with new routes

    • These suburban-to-downtown routes are eliminated: 231, 232, 236, 252, 257, 258, 264, 267, 268, 270, 271, 272, 273, 278, 282, 290, 291

    • There is a new system of the 600-number bus routes servicing schools. Details are here.

    • Before you go anywhere, check the OC Transpo website to ensure that your bus still exists.

Conceptually, the idea is to guide passengers to the O Train as much as possible rather than provide point-to-point service by bus. Around 76,000 hours of bus service will be eliminated. – Josh Pringle at CTV

↪ Ottawa Transit Riders have released the results of its survey asking if  Para Transpo users see improvement in its service. Readers, they did not. – Ottawa Transit Riders

⚖️ The Frank and Oak store in Rideau Centre will be closing in the next few weeks. The Montréal-based company is closing all 14 stores across Canada as part of bankruptcy proceedings. Frank and Oak’s online store is expected to remain open. – The Canadian Press

🐻 The National Capital Commission tranquilized and relocated a young black bear from Kanata yesterday.  The bear, which was otherwise minding its own business, was discovered around Herzberg and Corkstown roads. Its new home will be 200 km away from Ottawa. – Ottawa Citizen

💣 At a 90 minute drive westward, Brownsburg, QC is a little outside
THE OTTAWAN’s baliwick but the request is compelling. Campaigner Lorraine Dixon is lobbying for a plaque to honour the Brownsburg Bomb Girls to be installed at Parc des veterans cenotaph. During the Second World War, women were enlisted to work the town’s ammunition plant. Dixon is looking for former Bomb Girls, photos, and other documents. – James Morgan in The Review

🛒 Every week, @Stromanker reads all the grocery store flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, he has found deals on ‘ground beef, chicken, apples, mushrooms, oranges, pears, and tomatoes’. – /Ottawa

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll

In the previous poll we asked, ‘Do you think the Ottawa Carleton District School Board has been managing its finances appropriately?’

    55% No

    6% All taxation is theft

32% If it had more money, it wouldn't run out of it

Tomorrow is Canadian Independent Bookstore Day. Which makes today’s poll:

We published an error the other day: the Ottawa Art Gallery is not holding a PA Day Art Camp today. They did that last month. THE OTTAWAN is not responsible if you drop your kids off in front and speed away.

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

We hang our heads in shame. THE OTTAWAN has long known about Sheila McKee Park on the Ottawa River near Dunrobin, with its 12 km of trails and the wooden stairs that lead you down a cliff to the water. But we have never been there. Now our blithesome friends at NarCity Ottawa are all over it, pictures and all, and making us feel very out of sorts indeed.– Katherine Caspersz: ‘This hidden-gem park near Ottawa has mini waterfalls and dreamy waterside trails’
