The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

Wednesday Food + Drink

Here at the ottawan it just dawned on us to start thinking about Christmas cookie baking. While we love the satisfaction of biting into a lovingly hand baked and decorated cookie, our biceps are weeping at the thought of the effort it all requires. Luckily, Ottawa’s bakeries have the solution for those who don’t want to bake the goodies themselves.

▪️Aux Delices Bakery has tiny gingerbread people with just enough of the sweet icing, and they have kits to make it easier to produce cookie art at home.

▪️Strawberry Blonde Baking provides decorate your own kits in Hanukkah, Gingerbread, Sugar Cookie themes, and they sell shortbread cookies that look just like the ones that used to come out of Mom’s oven. If cookies aren’t your jam they’ve also got Yule logs, cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, and cakes (excuse me while I grab my dribble bib).

▪️Bread By Us offer mixed boxes of three orange/clove shortbread and three ginger-molasses cookies for giving and eating ($13.50) but they also have rich looking Panettone and Stollen.

▪️Having lived in the UK for years, Martha and Darren have sampled a lifetime’s worth of mincemeat tarts. And we can tell you that the photo of the Mincemeat Tartlets from 3 Tarts Bakery had us drooling (they’re not available until December 1st, though, so don’t get too excited Darren!). If you prefer non-mincemeat in your festive tart, they’ll also have Apple Pecan Crisp Crumble, Sugar, and Chocolate Pecan Tartlets. They’ll even allow you to create your own tartlet box with a mixture of the above. Pre-orders start November 30th.

▪️There are vegan festive treats a-plenty at Little Jo Berry’s, including shortbread topped with a range of flavours from pistachio to chocolate orange. For gift giving there’s a tin of seasonal cookies for $38, available December 15th through the 23rd.

Other Food + Drink News

▪️The SOCA’s Black Friday sale gets you 30% off orders over $100 until Cyber Monday. The offer is only available on orders from the restaurant’s website, using the promo code BF30%. So tonight’s dinner could be a Vegetarian or Caribbean Dinner for 2, or we could keep it ultra classy and order a dozen freshly shucked oysters.

▪️Metallica fans take note: there’ll be head-banging good times at Overflow Brewing Co on Saturday November 27th, when tribute band Mentallica hits the taproom live music stage. So, how about booking some great craft beer, double tacos or Meatings BBQ snacks, and live music this weekend? Tickets $20. 2477 Kaladar Ave, Ottawa.

▪️Spark Beer has released a limited series of gift boxes just in time for holiday gift giving. For the imbiber who’s torn between cider, wine, and locally crafted sour beer, we like the look of the Collaboration Box, with its bottles from Farmgate Cider and KIN Vineyards and of course, Spark Beer. Note that we said the boxes are limited; once they’re gone, they’re gone. You know what to do.

▪️Local distiller Dunrobin has launched their version of Limoncello. Their version eschews sugar for wild organic Ottawa honey. Limited time only from their website.

▪️Dr. Yoon, a retired Korean professor of nursing, has launched a line of health, authentic kimchi. Delivery or pick-up from her website.

▪️Gray Jay’s Canadian-infused fine dining has reopened at 221 Echo Drive. It's former space has been taken over by Perch.

Deals of the Day

▪️Orléans Brewing’s very stylish, very comfy BHD t-shirt is on sale for $20 (down from $30), but only until 11:00pm on Monday November 29th.

▪️It’s the final day of the Betty x Bow One Year Anniversary Sale. Get 20% off the regular price of the fabulous locally made bodysuits, skirts, dresses, and scrunchies across the site, only until 11:59pm tonight (November 24th). One more thing

Subscribers to the Freewheeling Craft newsletter will receive an early bird code tomorrow for the Holiyay! virtual craft fair. They’ll gain access six hours early to the more than 50 vendors’ goodies, which include gifts for the foodies, beauty addicts, cocktail enthusiasts, homebodies, vintage lovers, and art collectors on your list. There are flat rates for picking up, shipping, and couriers, so it couldn’t be easier to do your 2021 online Christmas shopping.

We'll see you tomorrow – Martha and Darren

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️The Police Board approved a 2% increase in the police budget, over the Service's request for 2.86%. The Police had requested $14 million in additional funding, the Board will provide $11 million. The Board approval came after two days of meetings where dozens of presenters argued for a reduction in the budget. The budget will now go to City Council for consideration on Dec 8. [CBC]

▪️A Provincial Government employee and an associate have been arrested for gaining info from the COVID-19 vaccine booking system and sending out requests for money. People who received texts found that their names were in all-caps and written the same as their health record, leading them to believe it was either a legitimate health ministry text or tipping them off that it was a hack. The government worker was – formerly, now – employed in a vaccine booking call centre. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️Para Transpo has removed its removed its four-trips-per-day cap. In practise, that meant that people who needed to use the Para Transpo service were limited to two round-trips per day. [CBC]
