WEDNESDAY DINING + DRINKING UPDATE

⛱️ Ottawa loves a good patio in nice weather (sometimes even in lousy weather) so we’re excited to hear about the Sparking Lot that Spark Beer is planning. Meanwhile, this Friday (April 11) Spark Beer is releasing Glorious & Free, its hazy IPA collab with Dominion City Brewing. It’s made with malt from Mississippi Mills, hops from Almonte, oats and wheat from Alberta, as well as yeast from Guelph, Ontario. $.50 from each can purchased will support Somerset West Community Health Centre.

🧀 There are big cheese things happening at the Dutch Groceries store (1400 Clyde Ave), specifically imported creamy Goudas, a Dutch Emmental, and a Honey Goat Cheese.

👩‍🌾 Ferme Juniper Farm has a snazzy new logo and lots of stylish new merch. They’ve also announced that the farm store is once again open, Fridays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (just in case you need an excuse to visit the Gatineau Hills this weekend).

🍔 Gitanes Burger is opening an outpost in Manotick Village. That’s all we know now; contact us if you have more details.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🖼️ Court documents have revealed that the mastermind behind the Karsh Churchill portrait heist from the Château Laurier plotted the scheme from Wakefield. Police say that when Jeff Wood lived in the town, he ordered the replacement print online and had it delivered to his apartment under his own name. Wood also used his real name when he sold it to the UK auction house.

Wood pleaded guilty to the theft in March and will be sentenced this month. – The Low Down

🎧 Two new podcasts of civic interest have dropped. The 613’s Municipal Panel podcast features Neil Saravanamuttoo, Jon Willing, and Sarah MacFarlane discussing the Transportation Master Plan and the joint demands of the mayors of Ottawa and Gatineau.

Over at the City’s in-house podcast, OttaTalk, the hosts talk garbage. In particular, why the City enforces a three item limit and illegal dumping.

✅ The City is looking for comments on the proposed new names for six public amenities under its Commerative Naming policy:

    • The board room at Sandy Hill Community Centre as the Alicia Natividad Board Room
    • The skateboard park at 4101 Innovation Drive as the Blair Aiken Skateboard Park
    • The meeting hall at Rockcliffe Park Community Centre as the Jane Dobell Meeting Hall
    • The pavilion at AY Jackson Park as the Larry Ellis Pavilion.
    • The skateboard park at 1490 Youville Drive as the Stefan Wenek Skateboard Park
    • The neighbourhood park at 1756 Grey Nuns Drive as the Trèva Cousineau Park

If you have comments, the City has set up a survey page here. You can read biographies of those commemerated here. – City of Ottawa

🚗 Wheels of Hope is seeking volunteer drivers to transport people living with cancer to and from their treatment appointments. Administered by the Canadian Cancer Society, the programme does not currently have enough drivers to meet the existing need. Reimbursement for gas, or a tax receipt, is provided. – Lesley McKay in Stittsville Central

    •  What are you doing on Earth Day, Tuesday April 22? At Ottawa Tool Library, the topic is native plants and how to care for them. The DIY Wildlife Garden workshop will explore the way native plants, grasses, and trees can provide habitat, not to mention shade, stormwater management, and of course, beauty.

    • The 38th annual Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival (August 27-31) is better than ever with on extra night, more performances, and additions like the new Extra Stage (that makes four spaces for live music). There will also be more opportunities for hot air balloon flights (weather permitting). Five-day passes are available now for a reduced rate, before the artist line-up is announced on April 15.

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Do you hear that? It’s the sound of the bandwagon being jumped upon as the Sens make the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in eight years. And it wasn’t because the Sens won last night’s match – they lost 5 - 2 – but instead because Detroit lost in Montréal.

Steve Warne in The Hockey News has an interview with Sens president Cyril Leeder here, who anticipates tickets for the playoffs will start April 20.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says that the ‘Sens Mile’ signs will return to Elgin Street, between Gladstone Avenue and Laurier Avenue.
