      • 1,500
      • – The approximate number of shoplifting incidents at LCBO stores reported to Ottawa Police between October and December 2023. Ottawa Police says this is 76 per cent higher than the same period in 2022. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

      Ottawan of the Day (Honorary)

      • Linda Taggart
      • – The Halifax resident is offering to pay the fees for any senior who take pottery classes at the Nepean Visual Arts Centre. The City is racheting up the price of the class to $450 from the current $149.

Taggart discovered pottery herself after being diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and finds the City’s decision ‘crazy’.  (Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen)

      Quote

      • I wanted to come and see the stars of the s— show

      • – Ottawa police constable Pierre Fournier at his own disciplinary hearing determining his punishment after he was found guilty of discreditable conduct.
      • Fournier, representing himself, asked for ‘zero pay deductions and demanded letters of apology from the prosecutor and another senior officer, while also requesting a face-to-face meeting with Chief Eric Stubbs to explain his side of the story’.
      • Fournier was found guilty of discreditable conduct over an altercation with dirt biking kids in a gravel pit in Greely. The kids were accused of no crime and nobody requested the off duty officer attend the private property. Fournier denied physical contact with a 15-year-old and placed the blame on his twin brother by ‘pulling the kid off me‘.
      • No, that was not a 1970s soap opera twist; the constable's twin brother Guy was actually present. (Aedan Helmer in the Ottawa Citizen

      WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

      ❄️🚜 Mr Plow

      •  Inspired by the many other cities that do it, the City is launching a ‘Name that Snow Plow’ campaign. Announcing it on his Twitter, Beacon Hill - Cyrville ward councillor Tim Tierney offered up ‘Nickelback
Express’ or ‘Darth Blader’.  Scotland, which has been nicknaming its ‘gritters’ since 2020, solicits new names annually. This year, ‘Keanu Freeze’ joins ‘Sleetwood Mac’, ‘Icesweeper Willie’, ‘Gritney Spears’, and ‘Betty White-Out’. Ottawa’s campaign has not yet started but will be limited to 16-and-unders, so expect pop culture references that you don’t understand. (Twitter)

Never knowingly missing a chance to be a Grinch, Ottawa Bulldog suggests ‘You’re Late’, ‘Don’t Fill My Driveway Again’, and ‘What Will We Do With You As Climate Change Becomes More Serious’.  (Ken Gray in Ottawa Bulldog)

      🛬 Ottawa International Airport

      •  Lynx Airlines has gone bankrupt before flying its first route from Ottawa. The two year-old airline had planned to fly to Calgary and Ottawa this spring but now has cancelled all flights after midnight Monday. Lynx blames all the financial and regulatory conditions that existed when it started as the reason for its failure. (Brendon Ellis at CTV) (FAQ for ticket holders)

        ➕ Related
WestJet is offering a 25 per cent discount off its economy fares for any passenger who bought a ticket on the same route as Lynx for flights after Monday.

      🚏 Gatineau Transit

      •  The City of Gatineau is considering changing vehicle registration tax based on fuel economy. There is currently an annual $30 vehicle fee that goes to the transit agency but a new Québec law permits municipalities to vary that fee based on fuel economy. Municipalities must inform the provincial insurance board, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, by March 15 of a change and must pass a law by May 31 to implement it next year. (Natalie Goodwin at CBC

      🔥 Ottawa Fire Department

      •  City Council has approved making volunteer firefighters casual city employees. Previously, volunteer fire fighters, who mostly work in rural areas, received a stipend but did not get Canada Pension Plan or Employment Insurance contributions. (Maude Lipsett in Capital Current)

🛒 Donovan Burey’s Weekly Grocery Flyer Review

      •  Every week, Donovan Burey goes through all the grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. Usually we link this on Thursdays but we forgot. Super C has a great deal on boneless bottom blade beef at $4.75 per lb. (/Ottawa)

      BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Brigitte Pellerin in the Ottawa Citizen has written about the urban redesign of Ottawa that few of us have heard about,  1915’s Holt-Bennett Plan. Should it have been implemented, Ottawa would have been laid out like a European capital under City Beautiful principles. (More details on the plan)

An image from the Holt-Bennett, tweeted out by the National Capital Commission.
