The Ottawa International Writers Festival has released details of a number of upcoming events:

📚 Join author and journalist Tracey Lindeman in a conversation about her new book BLEED: Destroying Myths and Misogyny in Endometriosis Care. Hosted by Julie S. Lalonde. Monday March 20 at 7:00pm at St. John the Evangelist 154 Somerset St. W Free but tickets must be booked in advance. The event will also be live-streamed.

📚 Snow Road Station is the “coming-of-middle-age-story” of an actor who faces down her life’s final act. Thursday April 13 at St. John the Evangelist, 154 Somerset St. W. 7:00pm. Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.

📚 On April 19, join host Lisa LaFlamme in a conversation with author Mellissa Fung, whose book Between Good and Evil, tells the true story of Nigerian girls take captive by the terrorist group Boko Haram in 2014. Christ Church Cathedral 414 Sparks St. 7:00pm. Tickets start at $25.

    🚋 O Train

    • It’s looking less likely that the Trillium line will open in September. After three years, the line was scheduled to reopen this autumn but an update to council says that the builders are attempting to meet that date, implying a delay. A proper date may be given at the Transportation Committee meeting on March 29. (Joanne Chianello at CBC)

    ☎️ Civil Service

    • Call centre employees working for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will be able to work from home for an additional year after the department was given an exemption on the return-to-office plan. Employment and Social Development Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency were given exemptions last month. The Treasury Board had ordered each department to create plans for all civil servants to be in the office at least two days per week. (Catherine Morrison at the Ottawa Citizen)

    🗳️ Riding Redo

    • Kanata-Carleton MP Jenna Sudds won’t be objecting to having half her riding transferred next door to Pierre Poilievre’s Carleton riding. The move is recommended by the three member Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario and will even out the population between ridings across the province. Everything West of Thomas A. Dolan Parkway will join Carleton, with Kanata-Carleton becoming plain old Kanata. MPs have until the end of May to make objections known. (Jake Davies in West Carleton Online [Paywalled]) 

    🇯🇵 Rideau Centre

    • Japanese clothing and home retailer Uniqlo is coming to the Rideau Centre in June. While Uniqlo has been in Vancouver and Toronto for awhile, Ottawa is part of a nationwide expansion of up to 200 stores. (Ottawa Citizen)

    🚨 Gatineau Police

    • A Gatineau police officer who was convicted of harassment and attempting to obstruct justice has received his sentence: suspended, plus 150 hours of community service. He remains a Gatineau Police officer. (Ottawa Citizen)

    • Destroyer Canada has spent nearly 30 years paying tribute to the band KISS, and they’re bringing their wild show to Queen St. Fare this Saturday March 18. So get ready to Rock and Roll All Nite. $28.60 

    Just Announced

    • Great Canadian Theatre Company has announced its 2023-24 season, which will follow the theme of “relationships.” The season will include co-productions with NAC Indigenous There and Native Earth Performing Arts, and in February 24, a Factory Theatre (Toronto) production of The Waltz. 
    • Registration has now started for Spring Semester sewing courses at Green Needle. New intermediate courses are available for those who’ve completed the beginner course, and there’s a new Beginner Pattern Drafting course. 
    • We’ve heard that taking part in Choir! Choir! Choir! is incredibly fun. The creative directors transform the audience into the choir. Presale tickets to the event at Southam Hall on July 15 are available until 10:00pm tonight. Use the code CHOIR23 to get them.
