🚒 Service de Sécurité Incendie de Gatineau

•   Forty per cent of the firefighters in Gatineau have been prevented from working if they require a mask. Quebec’s workplace health and safety board has not approved all of the masks firefighters use, which must be tested every two years. Of the approximately 250 firefighters, 103 cannot use them and have been told to avoid emergencies where they are needed. (CBC)

🗑️ Garbage News

•  Ottawa cannot send its garbage to a planned incinerator in Pontiac because of Québec law. While Ottawa has a deadline looming over the impending closure of Trail Road landfill in ten years, an planned incinerator in Pontiac wants to take Ottawa’s trash. However, Québec does not permit interprovincial trash transfers. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)

🚨 Human Trafficking

•  Three women and one man were arrrested for human trafficking after a ten month investigation. The four – aged 22 to 26 – were charged with multiple offenses involving a young girl exploited across Québec and Ontario. The Ontario Provincial Police say there may be more victims and ask anyone with information to call 1 888 310 1122. (William Eltherington at CTV)  

⚡ Battery Storage

•  Gatineau’s Evolugen has a plan to build rural battery storage in Manotick. The same company has plans to build a battery storage facility in West Carleton. The idea is to buy electricity cheap at night and sell it back to Hydro One during peak hours. A public meeting will be held 6:30 pm Tuesday Nov. 28 at  the Manotick Arena, 5572 Dr. Leach Drive. 😚 KISS

•  Last night’s KISS concert at Canadian Tire Centre was cancelled as the doors were opening. A tweet from the band says it was due to an illness ‘in the band party’. We only mention this because this is the final tour by KISS and, unless there is an unlikely rescheduling, the band will never visit Ottawa again. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

The City has closed the Chief William Commanda Bridge for winter. The incredibly popular pedestrian crossing over the Ottawa River between the Bayview transit station and the southern tip of Gatineau Park opened last summer. The City’s public works and recreation department said of the 143-year old former train crossing, ‘Due to the bridge’s steel structure and timber plank surface, the City is unable to safely undertake any plowing, salting or grit operations’. 

On Twitter, @DvdHam asks if anyone has the grant application to Infrastructure Canada from the City for funding, as the motion asking for it said the bridge ‘would serve as an interprovincial link for commuting and recreational cyclists, cross-country skiers and visitors...’
