HELLO, OTTAWA

Dr Vera Etches has a message for us: keep it together or we're back into the Red ZoneWastewater monitoring hints that we could be facing a third-wave.

That would mean essential shops only, no socially-distanced visits with family, and stay-at-home mandates once again.

Etches reminds us that increased vaccine availability will take months to make a difference – we must continue socially distancing and wearing masks.

Patience, Ottawa. We’re getting there.

We'll see you Monday – Martha and Darren

#WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

▪️ Get ready Stittsville, you may be getting a strip mall with a Mr Lube and a Starbucks! Developers want to take the empty lot on Hazeldean Road near Stittsville Main Street and build the mini plaza, which would also feature a car wash and, excitingly, another shop, as-yet-undetermined. [Stittsville Central]

▪️ The City will buy a batch of new electric buses, thanks to new money from the Federal government. City staff will report next week how many can be purchased. The City has is currently waiting for four previously-purchased electric buses. [Ottawa Citizen

▪️ The City wants your opinion on a potential Vacant Unit Tax. It's obviously important because the City has created a form. There are 20,000 empty apartments and houses in Ottawa – says StatsCan – and the theory is taxing landlords for leaving them empty would encourage rentals. They do this in Vancouver and the mayor there thinks it works. [City of Ottawa

▪️ Songs for Murdered Sisters, a film and an album honouring women killed by partners is released today. Commissioned by the National Arts Centre orchestra and the Houston Grand Opera and featuring poetry by Margaret Atwood and vocals by opera singer Joshua Hopkins. In 2015, Hopkins’ sister Natalie was one of three women murdered on the same day by a man with whom all had a previous relationship. [The Guardian] [Songs for Murdered Sisters]

#SPRING WARDROBE EDIT

Menswear

▪️ It’s almost the time of year when the snow is in full melting mode, and little rivulets of cold water running down the sidewalk threaten to dampen your every step. You’ll need a shoe that can withstand the remaining crusty snow as well as the water, but ideally one that's packing style as well. The Ontario shoe by Baffin covers the bases, with its waterproof rubber sole and waterproof leather upper. It’s cozy too, for unexpected cold snaps. $99.99. Made in Stoney Creek, Ontario.

▪️ At the ottawan we love a sporty stripe. The #3396 Men’s Leather Motorcycle Jacket with Sleeve Trim by Bristol Leather is made in Montreal and will look hot whether it’s riding down the open road or lounging at the local pub. It’s got a detachable thermal quilted lining for colder days and nights. $739.

▪️ You’re getting ready to store away your winter outer gear, and your closet is calling for a new spring jacket. The SS Bomber Jacket in Charcoal, by Start With the Basis, is a smooth customer, with its two way YKK closure, water resistant outer shell, and contrasting black collar, cuffs, and hardware. Made to order in Canada. $395.

▪️ Sometimes a wardrobe just needs an injection of new tees. The Hockey Tee from Tuck Shop Trading Co in 100% cotton has some subtle/not subtle Canadiana messaging on the chest and comes in a variety of colours. Unisex sizing. Made in Canada. $38.
