WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

💰 Ottawa City Council

🚧 Road Closures

🏒 The Sens

  • Before the Sens drop the puck in a few weeks, a few items have arisen.

1️⃣ The president of the club, Cyril Leeder, says discussions with the National Capital Commission for a new arena in LeBreton Flats have been heating up. The two organizations had previously set a Sept 20 deadline.

The late-owner Eugene Melnyk originally wanted an arena and a hotel, the new owners want an Edmonton-style arena district with restaurants and bars. (Bruce Garrioch in the Ottawa Citizen)

2️⃣ Smiths Falls golf superstar Brooke Henderson has announced a partnership with the Sens to feature the club’s logo on her water bottles and golf towels during her Ladies Professional Golf Association tournaments. (Golf Canada)

3️⃣ The Canadian Tire Centre has unveiled a new hot-food market and a new drink market as well as new food items items like a Cubano sandwich, steak and potatoes, sweet sugarbush cheesecake, shawarma nachos, and a crispy Korean chicken bowl.  (Tyler Fleming at CTV)

🏗️ Development

🚨 Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada

  • A former Federal public employee has pleaded guilty for breach of trust over giving contracts to a company that he owned. While at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, the employee gave himself 72 sole source contracts as well as winning another six in competitive bids. He received a 24 month conditional sentence and paid $90,000, the amount considered his profit, back to the agency. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

DEAL OF THE DAY

Just in time for Back to School, save 20% on all laundry products at The Bare Home.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Wollastonite, mined in Seeley’s Bay – halfway between Ottawa and Kingston as the crow flies – is ancient fossilized limestone full of calcium and silicate.

When wollastonite is spread on a farmer’s field, it not only provides nutrients but, when it rains, the chemical reaction removes carbon dioxide from the air. The miner in Seeley’s Bay figures that for every 1.6 tonnes spread, one tonne of carbon dioxide is captured.

Granted, Seeley’s Bay is really pushing the boundaries of the ottawan’s balliwick but who didn’t want to know more about wollastonite?
