    QUOTE

    • If Jesus were to be here right now, I don’t think he’d be in support of a designation

    • – Richard Pommainville, chief administrative officer of the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall, commenting on the church’s opposition to Saint-François-d'Assise in Hintonburg and Saint-Joseph d'Orléans in Orléans being given heritage designations.
    • The Archdiocese believes the designations, both recommended by the City, would be burdonsome and costly to maintain.

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏒 The agreement between the Sens and the National Capital Commission requires eco-friendly construction and transportation. Using the Access to Information Act, the Canadian Press learned ‘[p]ublic transit, cycling, and walking’ would be the preferred methods of transporting fans, and the Sens would be required to design, build, and pay for a cycling and pedestrian bridge to LeBreton Flats. The arena itself would be ‘zero carbon’.  The Commission and the Sens expect to finalize the agreement this year.  – Jim Bronskill in the Canadian Press

🧐 Visitors to City Hall will need to go through a metal detector, undergo bag checks, and turn over any banned items as of next Friday. The newly banned items are: ‘sharp objects, blades or tools; compressed gas cylinders, aerosol cans, or powders; explosive or flammable items; weapons including replicas and toys; noisemakers, megaphones or air horns; and large placards or signs that are not made of cardboard or cloth’. The City says the new policy is the same as the courthouse next door and in place in many Ottawa public buildings.– CBC

🚨 The Ontario Provincial Police charged a tow truck operator on Highway 416 for watching YouTube while driving. Distracted driving comes with a $615 fine and three days license suspension. The Tweet shared by the Police shows a hands-free pad playing the videos next to the cup holder. – William Eltherington at CTV

↪ Ottawa Fire Service freed a cat stuck in a car engine Sunday.

🛻 The pastor of the Capital City Bikers’ Church, a group affiliated with the Convoy, says that an Ottawa Police liaison officer repeatedly invited him to attend protests in Ottawa. Rob McKee made the admission at last Thursday’s City Council meeting during public comments about the proposed ‘bubble law’. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is an advocate of a law that would ban protests outside schools and places of worship.  – Luke LeBrun in Press Progress

🗑️ Commercial, industrial, and institutional waste will be banned at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill starting July. Excluded are commercial metal waste, commercial e-waste, and commercially collected yard waste. The ban is expected to extend the life of the City’s landfill by one year. – Paula Tran in the Ottawa Citizen

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

If you, like us, found yourselves devoured by bugs last week, science can tell us all why. The recent snow melt created vast amounts of still water puddles, releasing thawed mosquito larvae. Usually, the larvae hatch slowly as the temperature warms up. However, the suddenly hot weather caused the larvae to hatch ‘all at once’. And ‘now they want blood’. Science sounds a little frightening. – Ben Andrews at CBC
