The Ottawan

HELLO OTTAWA

Premier Doug Ford, who has largely been absent from the Trucker protest issue, attempted to get in front of it today by declaring – please pause for the weightiness of the pronouncement – A State of Emergency.

What powers does that enable for the police or the City to act? None – they have the exact same powers to enforce the parking, air-quality, noise quality, and road blocking laws as they did yesterday.

Ford did say that blocking infrastructure and roadways could now be punishable by fines of up to $100,000 and up to a year in jail but that actually hasn't been enacted yet.

Meanwhile, with or without increased fines, the City of Ottawa or the Ottawa Police would still need to actually issue the penalities, which puts a damp squib over the pronouncement.

Speaking of damp squibs, during the media questions, CTV pointed out that last Saturday, a Trucker convoy in Toronto was attempting to block Queen's Park, the City of Ottawa had declared it's state of emergency, Ottawa Police Services Board chair and councillor Diane Deans said it was an ‘insurrection’, and Ford himself called it a ‘siege.’

The reporter then asked: considering all that, why was Premier Ford snowmobiling at his cottage in Muskoka on that day?  Some pictures of Premier Ford in his snowsuit last Saturday.

As questions about how well the Ottawa Police are recording incidents against residents continue, City councillor Shawn Mendard (not Mendes! Not Mendes!) has Tweeted out a community led resource. The End The Occupation tool is for reporting harassment is here. The separate tool for reporting fuel stockpiles is here.

The organizers ask the noise complaints should not be reported on these tools.

At yesterday’s press conference with the police, Chief Peter Sloly said that the two dozen or so trucks that left yesterday morning was because of skilled negotiation, not by threats of arrest. There is no word if the ‘carnival rides’ for Trucker protestors by an Ontario Provincial Police officer in his car would also be an incentive.

Now it is another weekend. No courts will be open, Ottawa City Council will not meet again until Monday, so it is another 72 hours of abandonment by the City.

We'll see you Monday – Martha and Darren

To replace the public Queen Juliana Park, there will be a private green space on top of the garage. [CBC]
