The Poll

Last Friday, we asked ‘Have you ever attended an event because you saw it in THE OTTAWAN listings?’

59% Yes, and it was the first I heard of it
9%  Yes, and although I knew about it, you guys repeated it over and over until I succumbed
15%  No
0% No, you guys so rarely get the Sens score correct, how would I ever trust the listings
17% I often intend to but then I realize that I would have to leave the house. and that gives me the vapours

We’re quite pleased  with this result. And please tell your friends who are looking for things to do about us.

Today’s question:

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

    🚊 O Train

    • Lines 2 and Line 4 will operate seven days per week starting March 16.  The new lines, previously called the Trillium line, had been closed on Sundays since opening January 6.

      City of Ottawa

    ⛸️ Rideau Canal Skateway

    •  The Rideau Canal Skateway has closed for the season. While it has been closed since March 4, there was hope that the weather would change and allow it to reopen. No dice, the upcoming week will keep on getting warmer. The Skateway saw 1.2 million visits over 52 days.

      CBC

🚌 Ottawa Carleton District School Board

    • The Ottawa Carleton District School Board may do a reverse ferret on its plan to make kids switch schools after grade 3. Under the current proposal, 11,000 students would be switching schools in September 2026. The usual number is 5,000.

Parents have complained to the Board, not wanting their kids to change schools at such a young age and to keep siblings together.

The Board will make a decision next month.

      CBC

    🗳️  Moving on Up

    • A Rockcliffe resident’s application for a job in the public sector has been accepted. Mark Carney, who had previously worked for the public service both in Canada and in the United Kingdom, had applied to be the Leader of the Federal Liberal Party, and was accepted yesterday. The job may lead to the position of Prime Minster of a G7 country, possibly fast tracked to as soon as this week.

    DEALS OF THE DAY

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

This story is a really great read from Ottawa Citizen reporter Gord Holder.

Holder came across a 1961 letter from his mother’s then-employer informing her that she was being let go because she was getting married. Holder decided to write the still extant business – Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company in Toronto – asking for an apology and, for good measure, to the Office of the Ombudsman.

Holder got a quick response. An apology and a donation to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Holder’s mom’s name, Georgina Gowanlock.

What was shocking to THE OTTAWAN was this quote from the apologizing chief executive, ‘I’ve never even heard of something like this before’.

Both Martha and Darren’s families have stories that echo this, as we are sure that many reading this do. While we are happy to know that this attitude has been placed in the wastebasket of history, we’re not so thrilled that it has been forgotten.
