HELLO OTTAWA

In May 1953, Martha’s mom travelled by steamer from Montréal for Queen Elizabeth’s June 2 coronation. On her trip back, feeling seasick on a deck chair, she met Martha’s dad, who was emigrating to Canada from Scotland.

So you know that we will be all be up at 5:00am to watch the coronation of King Charles III. The channel broadcasting it is ... probably all of them. 

Coronation Chicken was created for a banquet at the 1953 event. This time around, the official dish is Coronation Quiche – featuring tarragon, cheese, spinach, and fava beans. We'll make one if we’re still awake past noon, preferably with a glass of Pimm’s.

For those who wish to go outside, at 10:00am the official ceremony will be held on Parliament Hill. Performers will include the Algonquin group Eagle River Singers, slam poet Sabrina Benaim, singer-songwriter Florence K, the Ottawa Regional Youth Choir, and traditional music group Inn Echo with speeches by Algonquin spiritual advisor Albert Dumont and aerospace engineer Farah Alibay.

Over in New Edinburgh, the grounds of Rideau Hall will be open to the public and there will be music by members of the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces. Don’t worry about disturbing either the Governor General or the Prime Minister as they’re off to London this weekend.

    •  A section of Westboro Beach will be open, unsupervised, this summer. The National Capital Commission expected the entire beach to be closed until next year due to renovations but has decided to open a small part, with no lifeguards or water testing. (Ottawa Citizen)

    🏫 Four Day Schoolweek Nixed

    •  A plan by the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est to trial four day weeks at two elementary schools has been rejected by the Ministry of Education. The plan would have seen students start their year one week earlier, end three days later, and spend 38 minutes extra per day. The Minister earlier said that students should be in school five days per week. (CBC)

    •  The O Train between Hurdman and Parliament stations will be closed again this Saturday and Sunday. OC Transpo is trying to deal with water issues. A replacement bus will run between stations. (CBC)

    •  Boutique Cornerstone Pop-Up Sale. 100% of proceeds of this sale will go to Cornerstone Housing for Women. Friday and Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Thyme and Again, 1255 Wellington St. West.
    •  The Jane’s Walk festival of neighbourhood walking tours, which happens this weekend in multiple areas of Ottawa, launches today with a Festival Preview & Picnic under the Booth Street Bridge at Lebreton Flats. 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This year’s theme is Building Bridges.
    •  The Warehouse Art Party by Studio Space Ottawa is a fundraiser by artists to build more studios for artis. This won’t just be a stand-around-with-a-drink-in-your-hand affair. You’ll be invited to experience live model drawing, pottery wheel throwing, printmaking and lots of other creative pursuits. You can also purchase raffle tickets and original artworks priced at $100 or $250. Of course, there will also be the aforementioned drinks, from a cash bar. 6:00pm to 10:00pm at Studio Space Ottawa, 2477 Kaladar Avenue, second floor. $25

    •  Fans of brews, suplexes, and mayhem rejoice! It is time for VOLUME 3 of Remix Wrestling! Take Me Home, Broadhead Roads will transform the back of Broadhead Brewery into a loud, rockin', bodyslammin', beer drinkin' good time! Featuring crowd favorites, plus new and talented characters from all over Ontario and Quebec, paired with the best craft beer around. 8:00pm. $20.
    •  Freshen up your mother figure’s garden with a flower basket from the Greenhouse at Jardin Rochon Garden, which is reopening for 2023 at 8:30am. If you can’t make it to the Greenhouse (1101 York’s Corners Rd), Rochon will also be selling flowers and veg at Parkdale Market (366 Parkdale Ave) every week starting this Saturday.
    •  Arlington Art Market’s first event of the year is this Saturday May 6 at Arlington 5 Coffeehouse (the market returns July 15 and Oct 7). More than 100 artists, makers, food and vintage vendors will be at Arlington 5 Coffeehouse from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Free Entry. Arlington between Bank and Kent St.
    •  Carp farmers market opens for the 2023 season on Saturday.
    •  Jane’s Walk Festival route in Manotick will feature Dickinson Square.
    •  Cheerfully Made’s Spring Market on Saturday and Sunday brings more than 100 vendors each day to Almonte Community Centre, 182 Bridge St, Almonte.
