HELLO OTTAWA

If you own residential property in Ottawa, you have only a few days left to complete your Vacant Unit Tax declaration. Declarations after March 21 will incur a $250 fine.

Residential properties that are vacant more than 184 days per year are subject to a tax of 1% of the property's assessed value.

There are some exception to the 184 day rule: primary residences are excluded, as are some cases of house sales, legal entaglements, medical issues of the owner, and construction. But you still must declare.

🚨 Abdirahman Abdi

•  The Office of the Chief Coroner has opened an inquiry into the death of Abdirahman Abdi at the hands of Ottawa police in 2016. Abdi was pursued by Ottawa Police after allegedly sexually assaulting women in a Hintonburg coffee shop. An Ottawa constable was charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault, and assault with a weapon after punching Abdi several times in the head with modified gloves but was found not guilty in 2020. (Megann Wall in the Ottawa Citizen)
  
  ➕ Related A bystander has captured video of a man in Orléans who was shocked, struck, and kicked by Ottawa police officers. Police say it was a case of mistaken identity.

🗳️ Ottawa Centre

•  Former Ottawa city councillor Catherine McKenney is considering running for the federal Ottawa Centre seat for the New Democratic Party. Last Friday, we mentioned that Joel Harden, who holds the provincial Ottawa Centre seat, has filed papers to run. 👀 Supervised Consumption Sites

•  The Somerset West health centre has opened a temporary outdoor supervised consumption site. The Centre closed its site last month when staff complained of feeling sick, possibly from inhalation. (Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen)

🚒 Ottawa Fire Service

•  The Ottawa Fire Service had an unusual weekend.
  
  On Saturday morning, the Service helped free a small boy who had his fingers stuck in a bathtub drain, past the knuckles. After soap didn’t work, firefighters cut apart the bathtub, then the drain, and eventually carefully cut away the bits near the boy’s hand. (Alex Black at CityNews)
  
  Later that day, the Service rescued a man who built a raft and was carried away on the Ottawa River near Westboro Beach. The man, who wore a t-shirt but no life jacket, was cold but otherwise fine. (William Eltherington at CTV)

🚧 Highway 417

•  There will be delays on Highway 417 east of Casselman between April 1 and December 1. Eastbound and westbound lanes from 1.5 km east of the Highway 138 will be reduced to one lane for grading, drainage, paving, and electrical improvements. (Alex Black at CityNews)
