HELLO OTTAWA

The City is starting its consulations with the public over next year’s budget today, beginning with Somerset, Kitchissippi, and Capital wards.

Councillors Ariel Troster, Jeff Leiper, Shawn Menard will meet with the public virtually at 7:00 pm tonight to discuss priorities. Watch on Zoom here.

West Carleton is up tomorrow at West Carleton Community Complex, 5670 Carp Road; Bay, College, and Knoxdale-Merivale meet virtually on Monday  (registration required), and Rideau-Rockcliffe's date is Oct 30 (registration required). 

The public consultations with the rest of the wards are November 14 and later, so we’ll mention them closer to the date.

FOOD + DRINK UPDATE

•  Experience a local craft brew you might not have tried before. Renfrew Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival is this Saturday October 21. If you're hungry, food vendors will cover everything from BBQ to cotton candy.
•  Whiprsnapr’s 12 Days of Unfiltrd Beers Advent Calendar is back, is on sale, and is likely to sell out. This year you’ll experience 12 new beers in 12 new can designs. Consider it a pre-Christmas gift to yourself.
•  Speaking of Advent Calendars, La boīte ā bonbons’s version is available for purchase now, with shipping starting November 8. The gorgeous package contains boxes of between three and six sweet and sour candies for each day of Advent (December 1 to 24).
•  Ottawa area wineries, distilleries, craft breweries, and food vendors will converge for the Orléans Cork and Fork Festival November 2-4. Each nightly session offers live entertainment and either a tasting, a masterclass or a chef competition. It’s all happening at the Shenkman Arts Centre.
•  This year Diwali/Deepavali falls on Sunday November 12, and Purdy’s Chocolatier has specially decorated boxes to celebrate. They also have custom designed chocolate medallions for the same occasion.
•  Peter Hum at the Ottawa Citizen checks out the new Indian fine dining at Kathā on Preston Street, which replaces Vivaan. A souvenir menu from chef-owner Teegavarapu Sarath Mohan reads ‘We set our sights on being recognized by the Michelin Guide and Canada’s 100 Best’. Hum thinks that if the Michelin Guide ever came to Ottawa, Kathā would be worthy of inclusion.
•  Ameya Charnalia at Eat the Strip visited Gloucester’s Ottawa Falafel House. He loved that they used real Arabic bread instead of store-bought pita and says they have astoundingly good falafel.
•  Jordan Pizzuti in Ottawa Life magazine says ‘there is no better burger joint in Ottawa than Umbrella Burger’.  Preston Street’s Umbrella Burger plans to have another location in Gloucester soon. 
•  Fans of the Seven Tea Miles food truck can now get their chai and Indian street snack fix from a storefront on Richmond Road, west of Churchill Street.

We looked through the 44 various bylaws and the changes are things like ‘Repeal the expression “Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquaria (CAZA)” and replace it with the expression “Canada’s Accredited Zoos and
Aquariums (CAZA)”’ and ‘Strike out the word “then” where it appears in the
definition of "mobile canteen” and replace it with the word “than”’.

🛫 Ottawa International Airport

•  Porter Airlines is introducing a new non-stop Ottawa – Calgary route. Starting February 24. the new daily route will leave Ottawa at 6:20 pm and leave Calgary at 8:50 am. Air Canada previously announced that it would be ending its Ottawa – Calgary route at the end of this month. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🎨 Art

•  Studio Sixty Six has a new owner. As of next January 1,  Brendan A. de Montigny is taking over the gallery as new director and owner. A small snapshot of de Montigny’s extensive experience includes stints at Galerie LeRoyer, Galerie deBellefeuille, St-Laurent + Hill, Canada Council for the Arts (Art Bank), and Artscape. Gallery founder Carrie Colton will transition to a remote sales associate position for the gallery under her new enterprise Carrie Colton, Art Consultant. (Studio Sixty Six)

🎭 Ottawa Little Theatre

•  If you have a fully realized script for a play, the Ottawa Little Theatre wants to hear from you. The Theatre is accepting submissions for the 83rd National One-Act Playwriting Competition. The winner will received $1,000 but more importantly, the Theatre will perform the piece. Scripts should be between 25 and 45 minutes long. 📚 Ādisōke

•  Ādisōke, the new joint Ottawa Public Library / Library and Archives Canada ediface celebrated its ‘topping off’ this morning. The fifth and final floor was poured, ending that part of the construction and beginning the building of the interior. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe; councillor Matthew Luloff, chair of the Ottawa Public Library Board; Chief Greg Sarazin, Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation; and band councillor Frankie Cote, on behalf of Chief Dylan Whiteduck, Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg attended the ceremony. 
  
  Today’s ceremony also launched the new website and branding. Ādisōke is scheduled to open in 2026.

🚧 Queensway

•  The eastbound lanes between Carling/Kirkwood and Metcalfe, and westbound lanes between Metcalfe/Catherine and Bronson of Highway 417 will close for four days. Starting at 8:00 pm tomorrow and lasting until 6:00 am Tuesday, the closure is for the replacement of the Percy Street bridge. (CBC)

Just Announced / Now Booking

•  This year’s Noir Art Festival by Wall Candy opens with a Gala event on Thursday November 2, which includes food by local chefs, live performances, a free drink upon arrival, and a full festival pass which is valid Friday November 3 through Sunday November 5. The Gala will also be raising funds for Queensway Carleton Hospital. Of course you can skip the Gala and book an admission to the festival itself, which features a Day of the Dead Theme and works by of 55 artists from the Ottawa, Montréal, and Toronto areas.
