    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🙏 The flags at West Carleton Community Complex were lowered to half-mast today in commemoration of Dwight Eastman. Eastman was the final mayor of West Carleton Township, which amalgamated with Ottawa in 2001. He then served three years as the first City councillor for the ward that was his former town. Eastman died last Friday aged 80. – City of Ottawa

🌊 More homeowners have received water bills incurred by the former owner, years after the fact. A homeowner made the news last week when he showed the water bill the City had issued him for a 10 year-old debt of a previous owner. Now three more residents have come forth with recently issued demands from the City. The City's deputy treasurer for revenue says it is a coincidence and the City is not running a blitz.  – Arthur White-Crummey at CBC

🏊‍♀️ Recreation and swimming fees are increasing in a revamp that slots activities into three tiers.

    • Tier 1: swimming (lane swims, public swims, preschool swims), skating and gymnasium sports
    • Tier 2: weights and cardio rooms, specialized skating, squash and racquetball
    • Tier 3: group fitness classes, aqua fitness, wave swim, and rock wall climbing

Fee increases are expected to range from $5 to $10 per month. – Josh Pringle at CTV

↪ The City’s outdoor pools, splash-pads, as well as Mooney’s Bay, Britannia, Petrie Island and Westboro beaches will open June 21. Although still scheduled to close Aug 21, they may close Sept 1 depending on staff availability. – Natasha O’Neill at CItyNews

👕 The Urban Outfitters in ByWard Market may be leaving. A listing for the company’s only Ottawa shop has been posted on Realtor.ca, advertising 11,858 square feet for lease. (If you're interested, it’s around $29,645 per month). – William Eltherington at CTV

💰 Every month, CTV reports on how much income is needed to buy a house the previous month. In April, the average salary needed to buy an average house in Ottawa was $134,300, up $1,000 over March. The average house prince was $631,200, up $5,000 over March. – Josh Pringle at CTV

🛒 Every week, @stromanker reads all the local grocery flyers and posts the deals on Ottawa Reddit. This week, he finds deals on olive oil and ‘some better selection (and prices) on fruits and vegetables’.  – /Ottawa

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll

Last time, we asked ‘What should be done about parking meters at ByWard Market?’

    43% Parking should remain free

29% Two hours parking is standard across the City, it should be there as well

19% Paid parking is fine, but two hours discourages lingering

6% Paid parking is fine, and two hours discourages drinking and driving

1% It will make the drunks, muggers, and other stereotypical scary ByWard Market denizens move on in two hour shifts

    1% Other

Today’s poll: this is similar to our outdoor patio poll the other day, but outdoor patios can still exist with cars whizzing by.
