LAST MINUTE FATHER’S DAY EXPERIENCES

STATISTICS OTTAWA

    NUMBER

    • 20
    • – The number of years that the Ottawa Fire Service has been conducting its ‘Wake Up’ programme. Twice per year, uniformed firefighters knock on doors asking about resident’s smoke dectectors. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but the firefighters bring batteries, extra carbon monoxide detectors, and smoke alarms for those they do check.
    • Natasha O’Neill at CityNews

    OTTAWAN OF THE DAY

    • Wendy Alexis

    • The 70 year-old sprinter set a new world record for her age group Wednesday, clocking in at 14.63 seconds over 100m.

    • Alexis didn’t actually win that particular race – 30 year-old Nkeka Pinheiro of Toronto did – but it is her fourth W70 world record of 2025. The W70 class is for athletes who have reached 70 years of age but are not yet 75.

    • Alexis ran at the Ottawa Lions Twilight #2 meet at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility.

    • Cameron Ormond in Canadian Running

    QUOTE

    • THIS AND MY BUSINESS EXPERIENCE IN CANADA WILL BE A GLOBAL MOVIE – DOCU DRAMA – under the generic title, ‘NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED’

    • – A portion of a well-written and smartly-argued email sent to the CBC by the owner of a nuclear facility in Kanata after being asked if he would comply with requests from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
    • Best Theratronics makes cancer treatment machines using radioactive materials. After a 10 month strike which ended earlier this year, the company was asked to provide a guarantee that it had the financial wherewithall to cover costs associated with cleanup or decommissioning should the need arise.
    • Campbell MacDiarmid at CBC

    SPORTS

    • ⚽ Reader Rhys writes to us that Wednesday’s Atlético Ottawa match against York United was a Canadian Championship Quarter-final Leg 1 of 2 match, not a regular season Canadian Premiere League game like we said.
    • What’s the diff, you ask? The Canadian Championship is an annual bout between the teams of the various pro soccer leagues in Canada crossing over to play against each other. The winners feed into the FIFA World Cup system.
    • ⚾ FRONTIER Ottawa Titans 5 – Québec Capitales 3 yesterday

    WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🌊 The rumours are true: swimming is allowed at the new National Capital Commission dock in Dow’s Lake. Martha’s mom, an Ottawan through–and–through, was sceptical that the the age-old swamp would be safe for swimming, or would at least require a good scrub down afterwards, but the Commission says rigourous testing by a third-party lab has been done and they say it’s fine.

Ottawa Riverkeeper has published their water quality data here and, as of today, surf’s up.

The new dock also is suitable for canoe, kayak, and paddle board use. – CBC

💰 Kanata South ward councillor Allan Hubley says the City should warn residents when their water use is unusual. Hubley was reacting to news of a resident who received a water bill of $1,547, reflecting two months of a unknown leak on a toilet. The resident’s average bill was $100.

The City does run a consumption alert system that will notify residents if their water usage is unusual but it must be deliberately turned on by the property owner at their My Service Ottawa account.

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe says he is open to making it automatic, but there are privacy rules to consider. – Josh Pringle at CTV

💸 Federal employees will be pleased to know that the Phoenix pay system is officially being replaced. The new system, Dayforce, is finally entering testing phase. This was largely assumed to have happened but was delayed by the Federal election. Thousands of Federal employees have suffered underpayments, overpayments, no payments, and other issues since Phoenix was created in 2017. – Ottawa Citizen

🚊  Get on board for some OC Transpo news.

Remember, Line 1 will be closed all day Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

↪ As a result of the coroner’s inquest on the Westboro Bus Station crash, the City is considering installing driver facing cameras on buses as recommended by the jury. However, City staff warn of ‘significant budgetary pressures’ in doing that.

↪ OC Transpo has purchased 11 used buses to help alleviate pressure on the system as electric buses already purchased have been delayed.

↪ Line 1 to Trim Station in Orléans should be open by the end of the year

↪ Pimisi Station will be open on Canada Day this year. Last year, OC Transpo closed the station closest to the festivities in LeBreton Flats. Transit will be free on Canada Day.

    DAILY POLL

    The Poll:

Last time, we asked ‘Are you more likely to spend time in ByWard Market with the ByWard Ambassadors around?’

6% Yes, it great to have people looking out for the neighbourhood

23% No, it's sugar coating bigger problems

22% It makes no difference: I'll go to ByWard Market when I need to

40% It makes no difference: I rarely, if ever, go to ByWard Market

10% They should send a ByWard Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg since Canada doesn’t have an ambassador there

Reader Eric G offered to take one for the team and be appointed ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, presumably complete with residence and staff in Luxembourg City. We’ll forward the offer to Global Affairs Canada.

    BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Watch out for weird looking City SUVs in the upcoming months. The City is mapping everything – street signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, streetlights, pedestrian crossovers, and more – using a 360º camera and LiDAR sensors. Think Google Street View but to create Ottawa’s Digital Twin
