HELLO OTTAWA

  • If you feel like having a swim in the rain, Ottawa Public Health isn’t in favour.

  • The rain storm has brought high levels of E.coli bacteria and so swim advisories have been posted at all four Ottawa beaches.

  • Saturday may be a better bet.

Quote

  • If this motion passes, we are creating a shadow regime

  • – Kitchissippi ward councillor Jeff Leiper on a plan to ban councillors from negotiating donations for their wards. During a fraught and hectic discussion, city clerk Caitlin Salter MacDonald was put on the spot when asked if councillors could ask stores for donations of hot dogs to community events (‘Yes’), ask a developer to pay for a play structure in a park (‘No’), and asking for help in the aftermath of a tornado (‘Maybe’).

Leiper and other councillor’s main issue is that the arbitrator of the ban would be the integrity commissioner, who they believe would defer to the clerk. The issue has been delegated to a committee to consider options. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🐻 It’s Just Like an Ottawa edition of The Bear

  • Celebrity chef Dominique Dufour has been replaced in the regional Canadian Culinary Championship this autumn. The rules state chefs in the competition must be part of a restaurant that is currently operating to take part. Dufour’s beautifully designed Buvette Daphnée on William Street has been closed since a staff walkout over management practices May 31. While Buvette Daphnée is still closed, it appears to be accepting reservations for August 1 and beyond. Chef Sarath Teegavarapu of Kathā will take Dufour’s place. (Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen)

🌉 Alexandra Bridge

  • The indignity of the Alexandra Bridge continuesPublic Services and Procurement Canada held a press conference yesterday, reiterating that retaining the bridge, which carries 4,000 pedestrians and cyclists daily, is not feasable but would not say what the cost of replacing the bridge would be. The Federal government believes that the 1902 bridge is beyond saving. A 2018 report said replacing the Alexandra would cost $800 million but refurbishing it would cost $1 billion. (Catherine Morrison in the Ottawa Citizen)

📺 Night Mayor

  • In a video, CTV Ottawa’s Patricia Boal speaks with the City’s new night mayor Mathieu Grondin. No new information, really, but that fact that Grondin is now doing interviews is a step forward. Notably, Grondin only refers to himself as the nightlife commissioner. Good luck with that. (CTV)

DEALS OF THE DAY

Get a free Dry Body Brush with orders of over $100 (pre-tax) from The Bare Home until July 18.

Last week we mentioned that Alliance Française will be offering French courses for kids this fall. In even better news, if your child is enrolled before July 31 you’ll receive 10% off the course price. There’s also a siblings discount: get $10 off with the code SIBLINGS10.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

We’re not going to be able to explain properly what MONAHAN is. It is probably something best done in a dark room with a hot cup of tea and no other distractions.

Artist Laura Taler was commissioned by the City of Ottawa Public Art Programme to create a sound piece about the Monahan Wetlands. If you go to the Wetlands – it’s near a Circle K on Eagleson Drive in Kanata – you’ll find paths with benches.

On the benches are QR codes, which will play everything from songs and poems to nature sounds, interviews and stories from dozens of contributors.

Or you can go into that dark room, hold that cup of tea, and click here to hear the 173 bits of sound art
