HELLO OTTAWA

📤 Vacant Unit Declaration

The City has four drop-in clinics next week for property owners who still have not made their Vacant Unit declaration despite the deadline of next Thursday.

Everyone who owns property in the City must declare whether or not it is occupied and, if not, pay a tax. 

Seven per cent of property owners have still not made their declaration.

Property owners who do show up will be able to make their declaration onsite. 

  • Mon Mar 13: Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe Dr., main lobby, 11 am to 5 pm
  • Tues Mar 14: Ottawa City Hall, 110 Laurier Ave. W., Jean Pigott Place, 11 am to 5 pm
  • Wed Mar 15: Hintonburg Community Centre, 1064 Wellington St. W., 11 am to 5 pm
  • Thurs Mar 16: St. Laurent Recreation Complex, 525 Coté St., 11 am to 5 pm

    • The 100 year-old Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service veteran was honored Tuesday for her contributions to the navy as a morse code operator during the Second World War. From New Brunswick, she intercepted German U Boat messages and sent them on to the codebreakers at Bletchley Park in the UK. (Liam Fox in the Ottawa Citizen)

    🗳️ Local Democracy

    • The Ottawa Carleton District School Board shut down a public meeting and called police after the chair, trustee Nili Kaplan-Myrth, did not want to continue on the topic. This is only days after the Ottawa Police Services Board has enacted rules to limit the public’s voice by requiring all delegations to provide word-for-word transcripts in advance. The man who was cut off asked about the Board changing school washrooms to mixed sex and when was that policy enacted by trustees. He left before the  police arrived.     🌊 Flood Warning

    • The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority are warning that there could be floods this year, after having, at 308.5 cm, the second highest snowfall in 20 yearsHouses in low-lying areas alongside the Ottawa, the Rideau, the Carp, and the Mississippi rivers are at risk.     🖌️ Paint it up!

    • Youth between the ages of 12 and 25 are invited to paint murals across the City. To avoid being fined for graffiti, artists must send their proposed mural and location for approval by ByLaw services by March 23 and submit the full application to Crime Prevention Ottawa by April 14. An online information session will be held on March 22. (City of Ottawa)

    • The Business Development Bank of Canada presents Finding the Right Opportunities in Uncertain Times, a free webinar. 12 pm. 
    • Experience craft beer from Québec and beyond at the Festi Biere Hiver Gatineau, running today through March 11. Tickets include a reusable glass, one free drink, and access to the cloakroom (because you don’t want to overheat in your puffer jacket whilst sampling the craft beer, people).

Participants will learn from Inuk Chef Trudy Metcalfe-Coe, and will take home enough Bison Chili and Bannock to share with the family. From 1:00pm to 4:00pm, $75 per person. 4420 West Hunt Club. 
    • Thompsontown Maple Products postponed their Ceremonial First Tapping last Saturday, due to the massive dump of snow we received in the region. The new event is now today from 10 am to 1 pm. Along with the official tapping, there will be speeches, an interactive maple display, and a tour of the sugar camp. Plus fresh baked goods, Fluid Solar Roasted Coffee, and maple taffy. 780 Black Rock Lane, Clayton, ON 
    • The Soca Kitchen brunch menu is available Saturdays and Sundays, and alongside classic brunch offerings you’ll enjoy Mimosas at just $5 each.
