Stats – 26 April 2022

Weather: ?️ 30 per cent chance of showers. High of 14°, low of 2°.

Number: 320. The number of $494 tickets that have been issued by the Gatineau police to Ontario drivers who have not renewed their licence plate. Like us, you may have thought that since the sticker requirement had been dropped in Ontario, no one needed to do anything. Au contraire! You still need to go online or to Service Ontario and renew your license plate – for $0. The Gatineau police can look up if your plate is renewed – they don't go by the sticker. We read the news every single day and we didn't know this was still required. [CBC

Ottawan of the Day: Mika Weaver. The Mainstreeter has a nice interview with the owner of Singing Pebble Books, a business that she has run for 30 years. [The Mainstreeter]

Quote: ‘This bylaw officer went a little over the top, to say the least. For whatever reason, he wasn’t charged and he apologized to the police (as part of the pre-charge diversion), but he never apologized to Mr. Ifedi’ – Lawrence Greenspon, lawyer for Obi Ifedi. Ifedi has received a financial settlement from the City after a bylaw officer assaulted him by punching him in the mouth in April 2020, in the early days of physical distancing restrictions. Ifedi was initially charged for COVID bylaw offenses but was not found guilty. The bylaw officer was eventually fired. [Ottawa Magazine]
