After 48 years, Le Pied de Cochon in Gatineau is closing Saturday. As owner and chef Guy Mervellet is only 79 years old, works six days per week, and hasn’t had a vacation in six or seven years, this seems like an incredibly selfish move on his part say his loyal patrons.
Merry Dairy can once again sell tubs of ice cream in other shops. In 2022, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food forced Merry Dairy to stop wholesaling its ice cream as the shop was not a ‘dairy plant’ under the Milk Act. Under the act, dairy plants require massive amounts of equipment and oversight and do not contemplate small ice cream shops distributing their wares.
