What Ottawa is Talking About – 22 September 2021

▪️The O-Train that derailed on Sunday crossed a bridge before stopping. The Transportation Safety Board continues to investigate the derailment. [Ottawa Citizen]

+ Related Mayor Jim Watson says passengers should get transit for free in December, paid for by money that would have gone to the O-Train maintenance contractors.

▪️The bus driver of the Westboro Station crash has been acquitted of all charges. The bus crash in 2019 killed four people and injured dozens of others. Driver Aissatou Diallo was charged with dangerous driving but the judge said that he could not see the difference in her actions from the reasonable conduct of a prudent driver. [Ottawa Citizen]

▪️Gatineau is planning to rename Amherst Avenue. The City Council unanimously voted to change the street name, which honoured 18th century British general  Jeffery Amherst, who advocated the genocide of Indigenous people. [CBC]
