What Ottawa is talking about
💥 Clarke Kelly
- Police were called after an altercation between West Carleton - March ward councillor Clarke Kelly and the operator of a daycare. The West Carleton Kids Korner said they called Ottawa Police after Kelly ‘started yelling profanities at staff, threatening that camps has to go and using vulgar language and names towards staff and children’. The daycare had been running a summer camp in its office which is next door to Kelly’s in a City-owned complex in west Ottawa. The daycare says it is asking for a peace bond to ensure it does not happen again. Kelly says it ‘wasn't my finest moment as councillor’ but the dispute is a culmination of almost two years of messes, noise, and toys left in hallways. (William Eltherington at CTV)
🏇 Musical Ride
- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Musical Ride is suffering from a lack of recruits. A new report says the Ride, based in Rockcliffe, is lacking riders because Mountie supervisors across Canada are unwilling to sign off on transfers because they themselves are short staffed. (Catharine Tunney at CBC)
↔️ Renovictions
- The new owner of an apartment building on Richmond Road is evicting hundreds of people for renovations. Richmond Road Management is offering residents $5,000 to break their lease now or come back after renovations to the same unit with higher rent. Some current residents are paying rent of $1,300 per month for a two bedroom, which will be almost impossible to find elsewhere. (Katelyn Wilson at CTV)
➕ Related Somerset ward councillor Ariel Troster says the streets around a new development on the old Greyhound station are dangerous to cyclists. The new development will have only 360 parking spaces but 1,164 bicycle racks for the 1,134 apartments.

STATISTICS OTTAWA
NUMBER
30 – 60
– The amount in minutes that the Canadian National Railway is adding to some VIA Rail trains going through Ottawa. Canadian National says that the year-old Siemens-built trainsets that VIA is starting to use sometimes do not trigger crossing gates and has ordered VIA to slow down, or add more cars to each train. VIA generally doesn’t have more cars available.

The Turtle Guardians of Petrie Island
- The Guardians collect turtle eggs – mostly to protect them from getting eaten by coyotes and skunks – and incubate them. When they hatch, they bring the tiny turtles back to the beach and set them free.

❝ It was very disheartening to me that accessible transportation is so unreliable in our nation's capital
– Waterloo councillor Chantal Huinink in a letter to Mayor Mark Sutcliffe over her experience as a wheelchair user when she was in town for a conference. She was appalled by Para Transpo’s one hour window for pickups in particular.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT
💣 Mer Bleue Bog
▪️There are unexploded Second World War bombs sunk in Mer Bleue bog says the Department of National Defence. The Department says that it knows where they are – deep in boggy bits where people can’t walk — but it doesn’t really know how many there are. Between 1942 and 1945, the bog was used as a testing range for bombs of up to 1,000 pounds. A 1960s task force decided that clearing it was more trouble than it was worth.
David Pugliese in the Ottawa Citizen
🚊 O Train
▪️Halfway through testing, and the Trillium Line is doing well. The latest day’s results – Monday, October 14 – found 99.4 per cent reliability. Over the past eight days, that’s 99.6 per cent. To pass, the O Train must average 98.5 per cent reliability over 14 days.
However, it wasn’t all sunshine and non-square wheels, as 29 trains on the spur line to the airport did not run on Saturday due to a lack of drivers. These skipped trains did not count as ‘reliability’ and did not affect the per centage.
Natasha O’Neill at CityNews
💉 Baby RSV Vaccine
▪️The vaccine to combat RSV is now available for infants in Ottawa. This is the first time in Canada that the vaccine has been okayed for babies. Other countries have seen a reduction in contagion of up to 80 per cent when infants are immunized. RSV is a severe respiratory illness that is particularly harmful to infants and seniors. The vaccines will be provided by hospitals after birth and for those kids at high risk.

- The damages asked for by Dr Brian Nadler and family in a lawsuit against the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital and several staff members. Nadler was acquitted this week of four charges of first degree murder after the Crown declined to present any evidence. The doctor says that police only charged him because of ‘false statements’ from hospital staff. He maintains that the four elderly patients under his supervision at the hospital died of COVID 19 complications. (Nicole Williams and David Fraser at CBC)
